RECOMMENDATIONS FROM KYIV ZOO SPECIALISTS FOR ANIMALS’ PROTECTION AGAINST STRESS DUE TO SHOOTING AND BOMBING

Birds

In advance remove everything superfluous from the cages that can injure a bird. There should be cuttings, a feeder, a drinker. During the flight, the cage should be moved to the quietest room (pantry, toilet, bathroom, etc.). Turn on the light so a bird can see familiar objects and cuttings. Communicate with a bird in a normal calm voice. Do not change the animal’s cage! It needs a familiar environment, familiar smells.

Reptiles (turtles, snakes, lizards)

Under these circumstances, when there may be power outages in the settlements, heat, when it is difficult to replace or repair equipment, it is best to gradually put the animals in hibernation. This is a stop to feeding, and after cleaning the intestines – a gradual decrease in temperature. Beforehand, carefully read the relevant instructions from open sources regarding your reptiles’ species.

The majority of reptiles will be able to spend a month in this state without any consequences. And even two months with almost no consequences.

Cats and dogs

Communicate with animals. Maintain tactile contact. If an animal is overly stressed, use veterinary sedatives. If veterinary drugs are not available, you can use drugs from a regular pharmacy:

Gebapentin (10-30 ml per 1 kg of animal weight);

Hidazepam (0.05 g tablet for a large dog, 0.02 g tablet for a medium dog, ¼ 0.02 g tablet for a cat or small dog, such as a Chihuahua);

Corvaltab (1 tablet for every 10 kg of animal weight);

Corvalol (1 drop per kg of animal weight).

Do not overfeed animals, monitor their diet and condition, because stress quickly affects the gastrointestinal tract of an animal.

Small mammals (hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, etc.)

Move an animals to the quietest enclosed space in the house. You can wrap the animal’s cage with a blanket, but not in any case with a film or a thick cloth, because the animal needs oxygen. Take small animal in your arms to reduce its arousal. Do not change the animal’s cage! It needs a familiar environment, familiar smells.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones! Stay safe!
