On March 28-29, the Kyiv Zoo hosted the Ukrainian Mapping Conference: “Mammals on the Map of Ukraine.” The first mammal distribution atlas in Ukraine is being created by joint efforts, which will become part of the European Mammal Atlas. There is still a lot of work to be done, as there are about 120 species of mammals in the wild in Ukraine, and the state of the populations of most of them is poorly studied. In addition to important general information about the Atlas, the conference participants learned about the experience of creating such Atlases in other countries (Belarus, Bulgaria, Moldova), as well as the difficulties encountered by researchers in preparing the Atlas of Nesting Birds of Ukraine and the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles of Ukraine. Ukrainian zoologists shared their own experience in maintaining databases of mammal finds (bats, marine mammals, carnivorous mammals). Participants presented their own observations.
