FIRST “ALL-UKRAINIAN ZOO PROTECTION AWARD”: THOSE WHO SAVE LIVES
For the first time in the history of public projects in the fields of nature protection and ecology, an event worthy of special attention took place. The Head of the swan shelter, the leading biologist of Kyiv Zoo Serhii Hryhoriev became the laureate of the First All-Ukrainian Animal Protection Award 2022.
The shelter was created in 2016. Now 33 swans are being rehabilitated there. The main goal is to return the birds to nature and provide shelter for injured individuals.
In total during this time 120 birds that suffered from diseases, injuries and cruel treatment received help in Mezhyhirsky Swan Shelter.
Many thanks to Kyiv Animal Rescue Team and personally to its founder Mykhailo Storozhuk, who, by the way, at one time was a young naturalist in Kyiv Zoo.
Dear Ukrainians and friends from abroad.
Injured birds receive necessary veterinary examination and treatment in the veterinary clinic of our zoo, recommendations for further rehabilitation from ornithologists and zoo scientists, and are sent to the shelter for further recovery and quarantine. For this purpose, the shelter has 4 spacious enclosures.
Further rehabilitation takes place in semi-free housing in 7 artificial reservoirs, where even in winter there is open water for free swimming and several hectares of pastures where birds can feed themselves.

If you saw swans on a pond in winter, don’t make a fuss. These birds usually winter in the territory of Ukraine, where there is open water. They keep in groups and fly to other ponds.
In most cases, they do not need help. You need to pay attention to swans that are kept separately, or those that are not active, sleep a lot, hiding their heads under their wings, as well as those that have obvious physical injuries, wounds. Or have foreign objects on them that prevent them from eating and moving.
Regarding such birds we advise you to contact the Kyiv Animal Rescue Team, who will assess the situation from their own experience. And if necessary, they will catch and transfer a bird to Mezhyhirsky Swan Shelter.
⬇ If you still decide to help the swan, then you must do it CORRECTLY:
❌ ❗ Do not try to feed a bird with bread and bakery products!
✔ FEED ONLY WITH WHOLE GRAIN – wheat, corn or oats.
Food should be scattered along the water line, so the swans will eat comfortably.
