Chornobyl – research in the exclusion zone
April 26 is the date of the Chornobyl tragedy. But the exclusion zone now is a revival zone. Extremely valuable natural complexes that have to be researched have been preserved here. In 2015 at the initiative of the Director of Kyiv Zoo Mr.Trantin, Kyiv Zoological Park joined researches together with the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve.
Our scientists work in the field of ecology and behavior of Przewalski’s wild horses, wolves and lynx. And even release in the wild rehabilitated bats. Each year, research results are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and reported at conferences. Why is this important? Because the zoo is primarily a scientific and environmental institution and we, as a zoo with a high status of Candidate for membership in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria EAZA, develop research projects for species conservation. Over the years, we have learned about the numbers and genetic characteristics of wild horses group, found out what wolves eat and what areas the lynx choose. Did you know that large predators and wild horses live near the capital?
