The redtail catfish is native to the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo river basins of South America, in Colombia,Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. It is found only in fresh water and inhabits larger rivers, streams and lakes

It grows up to 1m 20cm in natural bodies of water and 90 cm - in aquariums. Our catfish in length - 70 cm.

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus can reach about 1.2 m in length in nature, and 90 cm in aquariums. Our catfish is 70 cm long. These colorful large catfishes have a brownish back, with yellow sides and characteristic orange-red dorsal fin and caudal fin(hence the common name). It has a pair of barbels on the upper jaw and two pairs on the lower jaw.

Not aggressive, getting used to the people who takes care of them, it is called "catfish-pussy" because it has a gentle character. In the Zoo catfish feed on fish and squid, shrimp and lean fish.

They live up to 20 years.
